Miniatures
A Fine Art section has been added to my website, currently showcasing an exploration of miniatures. Why the mini scale?
“I want to start painting large scale works. More expressive and gestural!”, I said to a friend last year. I had grand plans (and still do) for larger landscapes and florals. Large scale, though I do crave it, requires energy, a healthy dose of joy, and feelings of certainty. Yet, when I would get down to my studio and finally go inward, processing whatever subconscious thoughts and feelings came up, the small and tiny frames I found while antiquing were drawing me in. Painting within them, I searched for peace, composure, optimism. In retrospect, when the outside world feels loud and chaotic (and boy, does it…), I look for refuge in these tiny portals. Not as an escape, but a delight you notice when you choose to look within. Turns out it was the quiet voice, like a feeling of a book versus a music festival, I craved.
Not to mention that these tiny pieces look really lovely in homes—tiny or mansion sized. They’re intimate and inviting. They require a closer look, a moment of your attention. A miniature is not a statement piece you notice before you even absorb its surroundings. It’s an invitation. Step up, look closer, be nearer. It’s not the loudest deceleration in the room, but maybe a quiet stanza, a mini window that sees you before you see it.
